What is Jiu-Jitsu?

The Origin of Jiu-Jitsu: Dr. Akiama
Jiu-Jitsu originates from China, although it is often associated with Japan. Dr. Akiama, a Japanese physician and master of various martial arts, learned valuable self-defense techniques in China. He quickly realized that flexibility and adaptability in a fight were more important than brute strength.

During a winter walk, he observed the branches of a cherry tree bending under the weight of the snow without breaking. This inspired him to think that bending and flowing with the forces of nature was the key to survival and success in combat. This gave rise to the principle of “yielding to overcome,” which lies at the heart of Jiu-Jitsu.

Through these insights, he developed techniques that not only promote self-defense but also a philosophy of balance, adaptation, and using strength from the right angle. From this foundation, various self-defense forms such as Aikido and Judo emerged. The original Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu eventually evolved into modern Jiu-Jitsu and Judo.
